The Port Authority of Tarragona has awarded the concession to build and operate a multipurpose terminal at the Moll d'Andalusia to the alliance formed by Cosco and PTP. The project foresees an investment of 116,797,090 euros and will occupy an area of 510,586.30 square meters for a period of 50 years.

The award returns container traffic to Port Tarragona and does so with a staggered schedule. Operations will begin at the end of 2026, but construction work will take place between 2027 and 2028, while the terminal will not reach its full operational capacity until the end of 2028.

The joint venture will manage 510,586 square meters for 50 years

The concession will be held by a joint venture in which Rapport Investment Ltd holds a 51% stake and PTP Ibérica holds a 49% stake. The new terminal will be multipurpose and will reserve spaces for containers, general cargo, vehicles, and cold chain logistics.

Port Tarragona sees this infrastructure as one of its main bets for expanding activity. The estimated maximum capacity will reach 680,000 equivalent TEUs when the terminal operates at full capacity.

Santiago J. Castellà, president of Port Tarragona, linked the award to the recovery of lost traffic and the international projection of the facility.

"a historic moment for the Port, with which we not only recover the container and expand general cargo and vehicle movement, but we will become one of the reference entry gates in the Mediterranean for both traffic from China and the Far East and from Latin America" - Santiago J. Castellà, president of Port Tarragona

The terminal will start at the end of 2026 and must move 360,000 TEUs from 2031

The schedule set by the award places the start of operations at the end of 2026. This will be followed by construction work between 2027 and 2028, and by the end of 2028, the terminal will have its full operational capacity.

The alliance also assumes a minimum commitment to activity. From 2031 onwards, it must operate a minimum of 360,000 equivalent TEUs, with at least 200,000 containers.

Zhu Tao, president of Cosco Shipping Ports Ltd, argued that the project will be based on an intermodal model with a long-term vocation in Tarragona.

"All parties will work to promote a modern, efficient, green, and safe intermodal terminal. We are convinced that Port Tarragona will reinforce its role as a global hub, connecting industry, logistics, maritime and land transport" - Zhu Tao, president of Cosco Shipping Ports Ltd

For his part, Lin Feng, CFO of Cosco Shipping Bulk, stated that the port's location and its intermodality will allow it to become a Mediterranean base for the group's multipurpose fleet. Guillermo Misiano, CEO of PTP Group, emphasized to Diari de Tarragona that Tarragona's position is strategic and highlighted rail connectivity as a determining factor.

La Boella and Guadalajara-Marchamalo will support the Ebro-Henares corridor

The terminal's logistical design will integrate maritime management with the La Boella rail terminal. It will also link with the PortTarragona Terminal Guadalajara-Marchamalo and with platforms in Aragon to support the Ebro-Henares corridor.

In the initial phase, the project foresees 150 direct jobs. The figure will rise to 180 when the terminal reaches full operational capacity at the end of 2028.
