Adif has confirmed the loss of European funding for the transformation project of 19.4 kilometers of the old train track in the section between Cambrils, Miami Platja and L'Hospitalet de l'Infant.

Administrative justification and economic impact

A certificate issued by the Directorate of European Funds of Adif establishes that the initiative "does not adequately contribute to the intended objective" according to the call for proposals. The infrastructure requires an investment of 5.8 million euros that must be obtained through other means, although the entity maintains that this lack of funds does not annul the works contract signed more than two years ago.

The file dates back to 2023 when Adif approved the tender for this civic section. In February 2024, the agreement with the construction company Acsa was formalized with a fourteen-month deadline to carry out the works. The works never started due to discrepancies between the city councils and the railway operator regarding road integration and future maintenance. The town halls halted progress in October 2024 to introduce improvements and continue to await the signing of the corresponding agreement.

Citizen reactions and mobilization

Municipal sources from Cambrils indicate that the three parties have reached a pact to unblock the situation. The citizenry shows its discontent through public statements. The president of the Association of Neighbors of the Station Neighborhood, Nuri Nolla, launches a direct criticism at institutional management.

"It is very unserious that after two years of awarded contract it is stated that the project did not meet the requirements" - Nuri Nolla, president of the Association of Neighbors of the Station Neighborhood

"We will see if a new delay arises or if the contract falls through and forces compensation to the company" - Nuri Nolla, president of the Residents' Association of the Station Neighborhood

The convened platform organizes a new walk in defense of the greenway, which will be the fourth edition. The event will take place on Saturday, May 9 in Miami Platja, starting at ten in the morning from Estany Gelat beach. Participants will follow the historic route to the municipal boundary of Cambrils and return to the point of origin.

This mobilization adds to the open debate about the economic viability of the project and the need to find financing alternatives that allow the pedestrian and cyclist connection on the Costa Daurada to be materialized without further postponements.
