Workers in the province of Tarragona who lose their jobs through no fault of their own can access involuntary early retirement from the age of 61, provided they meet the contribution and job seeker registration requirements set by Social Security.

The main difference lies in the accumulated work history. Those who reach 38 years and three months of contributions in 2026 will be able to retire four years before the ordinary retirement age, while those who do not reach that threshold will not be able to do so at 61, but at 62 years and 10 months.

Contribution Requirements Determine if Retirement is Possible at 61

The regulation applies uniformly throughout the State, although the procedures are carried out in the Tarragona demarcation through the SEPE and INSS offices. The legal reference is the General Social Security Law.

In 2026, the ordinary retirement age will be set at 65 years for those who can prove at least 38 years and three months of contributions. In this group, the maximum allowed early retirement is up to four years, so involuntary early retirement can be requested from exactly 61 years of age.

On the other hand, the rule pushes the ordinary retirement age to 66 years and 10 months for those who do not reach that contribution level. This also delays access to this compulsory form of retirement, which in those cases does not open up until 62 years and 10 months.

Termination Must Be Involuntary and Requires Six Months Registered with SOC

It is not enough to be unemployed. The termination must occur for economic, technical, organizational, or production reasons, both in collective redundancy procedures and in individual objective dismissals.

Disciplinary dismissals and voluntary resignations are excluded from this pathway. Furthermore, Social Security requires having contributed for at least 33 years throughout one's working life, with the possibility of adding up to one year of compulsory military service or substitute social service.

It is also essential to prove registration as a job seeker for a minimum of six months before submitting the application. This procedure must be maintained at the employment offices of the Generalitat de Catalunya through the SOC.

The measure applies to employees of Camp de Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre who have left the labor market involuntarily and meet the access conditions. In all cases, advancing retirement permanently reduces the pension through reduction coefficients that vary according to years contributed.

These penalties apply throughout the territory and weigh more the earlier the retirement is compared to the ordinary age. The minimum requirement to enter this modality remains 33 years contributed, with the option to count one year of military service or substitute social benefit.
