Nissan has communicated to the workers' representation the implementation of a collective dismissal process in its three centers in Catalonia, where 569 people currently work. The announcement occurred this Monday during a mediation in the Departament d'Empresa i Treball, in the midst of an indefinite strike called in the spare parts center of El Prat de Llobregat.
The decision arrives four years after the closure of the Zona Franca factory. The company has transferred to the unions the proposal of an Employment Regulation File that will affect the spare parts plant of El Prat, the NTC technical center and the functional areas center, although for now it has not specified how many positions will be affected in each facility.
Affectation in three centers
The proposed ERE affects the entire structure that the automaker maintains in Catalonia. Specifically, it affects the following centers
- The spare parts plant, with 122 workers
- The NTC technical center, with 383 employees
- The functional areas center, with 64 employees
The company has not yet detailed the scope of the adjustment in each of these centers. The negotiating table for the dossier must be constituted by May 6 at the latest, a step prior to the formal start of conversations.
The strike in El Prat goes ahead
The unions have decided to maintain the indefinite strike at the El Prat spare parts center, called starting this Tuesday. The protest had been driven, precisely, by the rumors of closure that had put the staff on alert.
In this context, the workers have demanded that the extraordinary outflow of material towards other European centers, among them that of Holland, be stopped. The labor conflict is now concentrated in El Prat, where the staff considers that the movement of goods may anticipate significant decisions about the continuity of the activity.
The committee demands to withdraw the file
The works council has requested the total withdrawal of the ERE and has demanded from management a real, detailed, and transparent justification of the alleged causes. It also demands that alternative measures to job cuts be studied and maintains that there are organizational, productive, and labor options to avoid the loss of jobs.
"We do not rule out any pressure measure and or mobilization if the company maintains its position" - Works council, Nissan
The workers' representation insists that no decision is closed and emphasizes that the process is still in an initial phase. At the same time, it has made a call for unity, calm, and the active participation of the entire workforce, awaiting that negotiation formally opens and the real scope of the adjustment announced by the company is concretized.
