60 meetings and 14 months of negotiation: this is how the strike in Holy Week was avoided

PortAventura World has avoided a new strike on the eve of Holy Week after the company and unions reached a pre-agreement to renew the labor agreement for the period 2025 to 2029. The staff ratified the pact in assembly this Monday, giving an exit to an open conflict since December 2024, when the previous labor framework expired.

The agreement was closed last Friday during a mediation session at Treball, after a long negotiation and with moments of deadlock. The process has lasted for 14 months and has included around 60 meetings between the resort's management and the union representatives, in addition to several mediation sessions with the Generalitat.

End to a conflict entrenched since late 2024

The renewal of the agreement arrived at a particularly sensitive moment for the Vila seca and Salou complex. Last week, the company had announced the breakdown of negotiations after the union side rejected its latest proposal. UGT and CCOO, with representation on the works council, had been demanding wage and labor improvements, in addition to a reduction in workload.

The conflict had as its starting point the agreement signed in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, which included, among other aspects, the freezing of salaries. The lack of agreement led to the first strike in more than a decade within the theme park, held on April 19.

A strike with unprecedented impact on the resort's activity

That strike altered PortAventura World's usual operation and forced the cancellation of ticket sales and hotel reservations for the first time in the complex's history. It also meant the postponement of the party planned for the 30th anniversary.

After that strike day, both parties agreed on a series of improvements that are already being applied since 2025. Among them are salary increases above the CPI, a loyalty bonus based on seniority in the company, and an increase of up to 25% in the night shift bonus.

It has also been agreed to eliminate the mandatory exception weeks with a single day of rest, a maximum of six consecutive days of work, and maximum 8-hour shifts for personnel over 60 years old.

The new agreement sets the framework until 2029

PortAventura and the unions maintain that the new labor agreement guarantees improvements in salary conditions, conciliation, and work organization, while reinforcing employment stability and project growth. With Monday's ratification, the resort deactivates the risk of new mobilizations during one of the busiest visitor periods of the calendar and channels a negotiation that had been open for more than a year.
