The charging deployment in Girona exceeds the official goal with 505 inactive points

Girona exceeds the 2026 objective with 1,526 operational points, but keeps 505 plugs out of service. The network prioritizes slow charging, while Spain grows 3.8% in public charging infrastructure.

The province of Girona closed the first quarter of 2026 with 1,526 publicly accessible charging points operational for electrified vehicles, according to ANFAC data. The demarcation also exceeded the installed power target set for 2026, reaching a compliance rate of 121%.

The contrast lies in the part of the network that remains out of service. Alongside those 1,526 operational points, there are another 505 installed in Girona that are not functioning, a figure that coexists with the fact that the province has already surpassed the power goal set for this year.

Girona surpassed the 2026 target despite having 505 points out of service

The data places Girona among the provinces that have already met or exceeded their installed power targets for 2026. Across Spain, 18 provinces have reached this goal, while another 12 remain below 50%.

In parallel, the picture of the infrastructure also depends on how it is measured. Alejandro Valdovinos, Director of Institutional Relations at Circutor, explained at a conference organized by Diari de Girona and Prensa Ibérica that verifying these figures with complete accuracy is complex due to differences between sources, the operational status of chargers, and the way stations and charging points are counted.

"It is complicated to verify these data with certainty and have exhaustive control, as the figures can vary depending on the source, the operational status of the chargers, and the way stations and charging points are counted" - Alejandro Valdovinos, Director of Institutional Relations at Circutor

Furthermore, the Institut Català d'Energia counts more than 350 charging stations in the demarcation. This figure does not equate to the number of operational points, as a single station can house multiple connectors.

The majority of the operational network in Girona remains below 22 kW

Within the 1,526 operational points, the largest segment corresponds to lower power charging. Girona has 926 points of up to 22 kW, 74 between 22 and 50 kW, and 349 between 50 and 150 kW.

The higher power network has fewer units, although it already has a significant presence. In the province, there are 90 points between 150 and 250 kW and 87 of very high power, with at least 250 kW.

Outside of Girona, the public charging network in Spain reached 55,077 operational points in the first quarter of 2026. The balance represents a growth of 3.8% and the incorporation of 2,005 new points.

At the same time, the system carries a high volume of out-of-service installations. Throughout the State, there are 17,073 installed non-operational points, of which 733 correspond to the first quarter of 2026.

Catalonia advanced in electrified vehicles, but does not lead in infrastructure

The indicator of penetration of electrified vehicles in Spain rose 2.5 points during the first quarter of 2026 and reached 35.9 out of 100. Navarra leads the ranking with 50.2 points and Catalonia occupies the fourth position with 37.8.

In charging infrastructure, the progress was more moderate. The state indicator grew 0.7 points to 14.8 out of 100, with Castilla y León at the head with 22.6 points, followed by Cantabria with 21.1 and Navarra with 19.6.

Spain, as a whole, has reached 62% of the installed power target for 2026, calculated with the ACEA methodology and the Fit for 55 objectives.
