La Fonda d"El Foment de Girona has announced this Monday its closure, a decision that the Fundació Cultural El Foment attributes to the lack of staff in the restaurant sector. The entity maintains that this situation made it difficult to guarantee the level of quality that it wanted to offer in the establishment.
In the statement, signed by the president of the foundation, Candi Granés, the entity explains that it has opted to close the Fonda before lowering the service. The foundation points out that it preferred to close the space rather than lower the level of service after almost four years of activity.
La Taverna will remain open with a simpler offer
The closure of the Fonda does not affect the overall project of El Foment in Girona. The foundation has announced that the Taverna will remain open, although with a simpler gastronomic proposal to facilitate its management.
The entity thanks the customers' trust during the time the inn has operated and stresses that the project will continue with the same will to promote Catalan culture, language, and gastronomy. In the same message, it adds that the space closes, but that the memories will endure over time.
A growing project since 2019
The decision comes after several years of sustained growth for El Foment. The project started in 2019 with the opening of the Escola d"El Foment. In 2021, the Taverna d"El Foment was inaugurated, which ended up consolidating itself as a meeting point for music and oral tradition with the Cançó de Taverna cycle.
A year later, in 2022, the Fonda d"El Foment opened. The initiative expanded in 2023 with the Centre d"El Foment, a multifunctional space for concerts and private events. Already in 2024, the Sala l"Escola was born, dedicated to live music, and the Fundació Cultural El Foment was constituted to ensure the long-term continuity of the project.

The foundation frames this decision in the need to guarantee the long-term viability of the project. For this, it argues that it will be necessary to maintain economic sustainability and expand the base of partners.
