The Government has approved the Bicycle Action Program 2026 2030, a plan endowed with more than 240.2 million euros and more than a hundred actions in Catalonia to expand the cycling network and reinforce the use of the bicycle in daily mobility.

The program foresees the execution of 266.5 kilometers of cycle paths, another 428.1 kilometers of cycle tourism routes and the construction of 40 secure bicycle parking facilities next to railway stations. The highest investment is concentrated in interurban cycle paths, with 222.2 million euros. To this are added 7.4 million for cycle tourism routes and 3.5 million for these secure parking facilities at railway intermodality points.

Sixteen projects in the regions of Girona

In the Girona regions, the plan incorporates 16 projects distributed among Ripollès, Garrotxa, Gironès, Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà and Selva. The public documentation places these actions between Alt Ter and Costa Brava, although it does not specify what budget nor what timeline corresponds to each section foreseen in this area.

Four of those actions appear on the map as executed or finished. They are the Olot Santa Pau, Girona Salt, Vilamalla Figueres corridors and the Riells Breda station.

Other six projects are in the drafting phase. These are Les Preses Olot, Girona Sant Gregori, Viladamat l"Escala, Palafrugell Begur, Sils Riudarenes and Vidreres.

The rest of the corridors present mixed phases, with sections already finished and others still in drafting or pending subsequent steps. In this situation appear the Alt Ter route, Girona Celrà, Colomers Verges, Campllong Cassà de la Selva, Blanes Lloret and Palafolls Blanes.

Everyday mobility beyond leisure

The Generalitat proposes this program with the intention of extending the use of the bicycle beyond leisure and cycle tourism. The objective is to also incorporate it into daily commutes, especially on short trips and in corridors with potential demand.

Within that logic, the Govern cites as an example of connection between urban centers and industrial estates the Les Preses and Olot bypass, one of the corridors included in the planning for the Girona regions.

Cyclotourism routes with several axes in Girona

On the map of cycle tourism routes, Girona also appears with several already identified axes. Among them are the Ruta de l"Alt Ter, the Ruta del Carrilet, the Ruta Congost Ter, the InterCatalunya and the EuroVelo 8.

The approval of the program thus sets the general framework of action for the coming years in Catalonia, with a network that in Girona combines already completed sections, projects in drafting, and corridors still pending concrete development.
