Adif workers inspected the Girona railway viaduct this Tuesday, focusing on the lower part of the section crossing the Pedret neighborhood and areas near the station. The review is part of the actions promoted by the Department of Territory, led by Sílvia Paneque, and is part of the plan to improve local railway infrastructure.
Inspection and upcoming works on the Girona viaduct
The infrastructure, which exceeds two kilometers in length and was built in 1973, is undergoing a detailed analysis to determine the necessary interventions. The work to repair the viaduct is already being drafted and during these days the preliminary works that must be executed before starting the comprehensive improvement are being reviewed.
The action is included in the Rodalies plan for the period 2026-2030, with an investment of 15,730,000 euros for the improvement works of the Girona viaduct, financed by the State. The objective is to guarantee the safety and reliability of the railway service at this strategic point of the Catalan network
Context and railway planning in Catalonia
The fatal accident in Gelida on January 20, in which a train driver died, has highlighted the need to update and strengthen railway infrastructure in Catalonia. At the end of January, the Ministry of Transport and the Generalitat presented the new Rodalies plan until 2030, which foresees a global investment of 8,037 million euros for the period 2020-2030
- The plan contemplates three main objectives: greater infrastructure reliability, greater service quality, and greater system capacity.
- For the first time, a specific program is included to build workshops and parking tracks intended for the 53 new trains that will be incorporated into service.
Trains from line R11, which connects Barcelona Sants with Portbou, and from line RG1, which connects Portbou with L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, run through Girona, although the latter does not operate on weekends.
Progressive service recovery and limitations
The Government has presented a calendar to recover normality in the Rodalies service, except in the sections of the R3 and R15, where the planned works continue. Sílvia Paneque has advanced that the total opening of the system could occur between the end of this week and the beginning of the next
"Between the end of this week and the beginning of next, there could be the total opening of the system" - Sílvia Paneque, Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition
Despite this forecast, the councilor has warned that there will still be up to 70 sections with speed limits. Half of them could be restored in two weeks and the rest in a few more weeks
"The alternative transport plans will not be withdrawn until we have the certainty that operations are maintained over time, until there is sustainability in the system" - Sílvia Paneque, Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition
The free travel on Rodalies tickets will be maintained as long as the restrictions persist. Paneque has underlined that the schedule of actions has allowed for a work methodology that facilitates the progressive reopening of the affected railway lines
The inspection of the Girona viaduct and the planning of the improvement works are part of a coordinated effort to modernize the network and guarantee a safe and efficient service for local users.
