The Girona City Council plans to deploy the new green zone first in l'Eixample and Sant Narcís, two neighborhoods that will be prioritized within the new municipal parking regulation plan. This was announced by the mayor, Lluc Salellas, in a meeting with residents of l'Eixample, in which he placed these two sectors as the first where the measure will be applied.

The municipal government estimates taking to the plenary between April and May the approval of the establishment of the green zone service. That procedure is essential to be able to expand both the green zones and the blue zones in the city, since it requires a prior study on parking and mobility.

"We must go into a fairly comprehensive study around parking and mobility. All of this we have already finished" - Lluc Salellas, mayor of Girona

First implantations in Sant Narcís and l'Eixample

Salellas specified that the implementation will not be immediate after the approval of the plenary. The mayor pointed out that the application will come after a few months, once the steps subsequent to the approval have been completed.

The intention of the city council is that the residents of these two neighborhoods have more capacity to park in a regulated zone with resident conditions. The approach goes beyond the specific action already executed in 2024 in the vicinity of Güell Devesa.

A broader expansion than that applied in 2024

Last year, the City Council expanded the Güell Devesa green zone with more than a hundred spaces located in the northern part of Sant Narcís. That intervention allowed residents of this sector and of a part of l"Eixample to avail themselves of the resident conditions in those spaces.

Now, the new municipal approach outlines a phase of greater scope. The forecast is to extend the green zone more extensively in l"Eixample and Sant Narcís, leaving behind the limited expansion model applied until now.

The municipal study foresees acting on thousands of spaces

The technical basis of the project already pointed to a large-scale intervention on parking in Girona. A municipal study proposed acting on 11,784 unregulated spaces in various urban sectors of the city.

That same document foresaw increasing the green zone from the 869 existing spaces to 9,176. It also contemplated expanding the blue zone and incorporating the orange zone, conceived as regulated long-stay parking for drivers from outside Girona.

The scope of the plan affected eleven neighborhoods, among them Barri Vell, Santa Eugènia, Mercadal, Sant Narcís, Montilivi and l"Eixample Sud. The orientation of the municipal government was based on the need to control the abusive use of private vehicles and favor an equitable distribution of parking space.

A project pending adjustment with each neighborhood

The council had already made it clear that the general project must be finalized with the residents before its definitive deployment in each area. That neighborhood adjustment will be one of the previous steps to the effective implementation of a measure that, if it passes the plenary procedure scheduled for this spring, will begin to take shape first in Sant Narcís and l"Eixample.
