Movistar has alerted its customers to a telephone scam in which criminals pose as company technicians to request personal data, verification codes, or to force a change of operator without consent.

The fraud begins with calls that imitate 1004 or end in those four digits and allege a supposed implementation of FTTR technology with mandatory router replacement. The maneuver takes advantage of the appearance of a technical service to try to process a portability that the user has not requested.

Scammers use calls that imitate 1004 to request SMS codes

During the call, the perpetrators of the deception seek to gather the client's personal information. They also try to get them to provide codes received by SMS or to accept a verbal recording that can later be used as justification for a change of company.

Movistar recommends not confirming relevant procedures solely by phone. The company asks to cut the call as soon as pressure appears to decide quickly, requests for SMS codes, requests for bank details, or insistence on recording consent.

Furthermore, the operator places the risk in a combination of techniques. On the one hand, the impersonation of the number known by the customer. On the other hand, the reference to a technical improvement that presents the current router replacement as mandatory.

The user can cancel the change within 14 calendar days if they have accepted it

When the affected person has already provided information or has accepted the change, they still have room to stop it. The way the company recalls is the right of withdrawal during 14 calendar days to cancel the process with the new operator.

In that case, the user can refuse the installation of the new equipment and inform their original company of what happened. Saving evidence is also key for a later claim.

Among these pieces of evidence are the telephone numbers used in the call, SMS messages, recordings, and emails linked to the contact. This material can serve to prove the deception if the contract has to be challenged later.

In parallel, INCIBE offers free and personalized cybersecurity advice through its official platform for those who need support after receiving a call of this type.
