The Generalitat will activate this year its railway plan in Camp de Tarragona given the ministry's delay

The Generalitat will launch this year the drafting of a Pla d'Infraestructures Ferroviàries del Camp de Tarragona to define the passenger and freight network of the demarcation. The announcement was made by Pere Macias, commissioner for the Traspàs Integral de Rodalies, during an event at the Cambra de Comerç de Reus.

The roadmap emerges while the study on the railway structuring of Camp de Tarragona, which the Ministry of Transport must present and which was scheduled for early April 2023, remains pending. Given that delay, the Govern wants to activate its own planning to order the railway needs of the territory.

"The ministry's study, we don't know if it's progressing or, in any case, it's going very slowly, which is why the Generalitat has to act and put a plan on the table after a process much discussed with everyone" - Pere Macias, commissioner for the Traspàs Integral de Rodalies

Planning with municipalities and agents of the territory

The general directorate of Infrastructures is already working on the tender for this plan, which will be addressed with the municipalities of Camp de Tarragona, the Diputació de Tarragona and the social and economic agents. The intention is to establish a shared proposal on the passenger rail network and also on freight transport.

The first phase of the document must address the Vila-seca intermodal and the definitive route of goods inland, two of the issues that concentrate a good part of the railway debate in the demarcation.

The connection between Reus and Riba roja continues by road

In parallel, the railway service between Reus and Riba roja continues with alternative road transport since the Gelida accident on January 20. Macias assured that the recovery of this connection will arrive in the short term, although for now the provisional operation for the users of the line is maintained.

With this new plan, the Generalitat intends to order a railway network pending strategic decisions in the Camp de Tarragona, at a time when both the definition of key infrastructures and the complete recovery of some services remain open.
