The building at number 11 Jacint Verdaguer street in Cambrils will be demolished after its owners, including the City Council, have reached an agreement to carry out the demolition. The property has been unoccupied since 2006 and is in an advanced state of deterioration.

The decision comes after nearly two decades of failed attempts to find a use for the property. During that time, the block has accumulated conservation problems, pests, and unauthorized entries, despite being evacuated due to the risk of collapse.

Urban Planning commissioned the project and seeks to coordinate the demolition with street works

José Ángel García, councilor for Public Works, announced at Friday's plenary session that the Urban Planning department has already commissioned the drafting of the project. The council has also requested offers from various companies to draft it and then carry out the demolition work.

"Urban Planning has given us the task of drafting the project and we are going to centralize it. We have requested offers from various companies to develop it and carry out the demolition works. If we can do it during the Jacint Verdaguer works, we would coordinate it much better and speed things up" - José Ángel García, councilor for Public Works, Cambrils City Council

The municipal plan is to integrate the demolition with the transformation of the Mercat de la Vila area, where reforms are already planned for the street. This coordination would allow both actions to be carried out in the same urban area and reduce interference on Jacint Verdaguer street.

During the plenary session, García specified that the building has several owners and one of them is the City Council. He added that the consensus reached by Urban Planning has finally made it possible to proceed with the demolition.

The five-story block has been empty since 2006 after being evacuated due to risk of collapse

Before being closed, the five-story building housed the Unitat d'Escolarització Compartida de Cambrils on its ground floor. The building was evacuated two decades ago due to the risk of collapse and has not been used since.

Several unsuccessful sale attempts followed. Over the years, the property's condition further deteriorated, experiencing pest infestations and unauthorized access, a situation that has persisted for the last twenty years.

The municipal announcement now provides a solution for a building that has been empty since 2006 at a point on Jacint Verdaguer street that also coincides with the planned renovation near the Mercat de la Vila.
