The Reus City Council will bring to the next Municipal Plenary session an extension of the street cleaning and waste collection contract with which it wants to improve selective collection rates and cover new investments in the service. The modification, if it receives the go-ahead, will come into effect on June 1, 2026.

The contract review also comes due to the legal requirement to increase the prevention and separation of domestic and commercial waste, but it also includes changes in areas unrelated to ordinary collection, such as the control of syringes or surveillance and cleaning in parks and gardens. The projected annual increase amounts to 158,135.99 euros including VAT.

Reus will expand door-to-door to 206 more homes

A part of the modification is intended to extend the door-to-door service to an additional 206 homes. To do so, the city council plans to purchase 350 container kits, 50 30-liter bins, and set up an emergency island with exclusive access control in an isolated neighborhood.

The contract also incorporates new containers for commercial collection and for festive events, in addition to new bins. Added to this is the renovation of the compressor at the cleaning park's gas station.

Daniel Marcos, councilor for Public Works, frames the proposal within a general update of the municipal service.

Containers will incorporate smart locks to limit misuse

The new service design foresees integrating smart locks in the containers. The system will allow controlling exact usage, blocking access to unauthorized users, and reducing the entry of improper waste.

The city council proposes that technology as a prior step to future pay-for-generation policies. The adaptation of the municipal model responds to the entry into force of Law 7/2022, which obliges city councils to improve waste prevention and separation objectives.

The syringe collection service will also change, moving from a corrective model to a preventive and continuous control model. Along with that adjustment, the contract will expand surveillance and cleaning tasks in the city's parks and gardens.

The contractual modification sets its entry into force for June 1, 2026.
