Road accident rates surge strongly in the province of Tarragona. With three days left to close April, five people have already been counted dead in traffic accidents during this month, a figure that equals half of all deaths registered in the first quarter of 2026 in the demarcation.

The balance returns Tarragona to its worst figures on the road and recalls the first two months of 2025, when the same number of deaths was reached on the provincial road network. Only in the last six days, three of these deaths have been registered, in Aiguamúrcia on the 22nd, in Gandesa on the 26th and in Roda de Berà on the 27th.

The N 340 concentrates the highest mortality

The road with the most fatal victims in the first four months of 2026 is the N 340, which accumulates four fatal accidents. This road has passed to head the statistics of fatalities in Tarragona and has displaced the AP 7, which during 2025 closed the year with 11 dead in the whole of the demarcation.

This year, however, the AP 7 continues without registering fatalities on its route through the province of Tarragona, while the N 340 concentrates several of the most serious accidents of the start of 2026.

Ten fatalities in the first four-month period

In total, the Tarragona roads total ten fatalities in the first four months of the year. Among them is a 30-year-old woman who died on January 23 after a collision with a wild boar in L"Ampolla. In February, a 71-year-old French tourist died after a head-on collision in Tarragona.

Already in April, a 61-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in La Canonja and a 47-year-old driver died in the municipal area of Roda de Berà. To these deaths are added those registered this month, reaching a total of five fatalities in April.

Profile of the victims

Of the ten people deceased on the road network of the demarcation, two were foreign, a French citizen and a young Hungarian. Three of the victims were motorcyclists and two were cyclists. Another of the dead people was a pedestrian, who lost their life after being run over by a minibus in Marçà.

The other five fatal victims were car or van drivers. The provisional balance for 2026 places Tarragona again in a scenario of high road mortality, with April as the darkest month so far this year and with the N 340 as the main focus of concern in the demarcation.
