L'Hospitalet de l'Infant wants to buy its old train station from Adif, closed to rail traffic since 2020 and abandoned since then, to restore it and turn it into a museum space about the history of the railway in the municipality.
The operation comes as the surroundings of the old infrastructure begin to be reused with new uses linked to the greenway. The contrast is that two stations inaugurated in 1865, in L'Hospitalet de l'Infant and Mont-roig, remain unused four years after the end of rail service, although the town councils are already negotiating how to reincorporate them into the local landscape.
L'Hospitalet reserves 60,000 euros to buy the station from Adif
The L'Hospitalet de l'Infant City Council has allocated 60,000 euros to negotiate the acquisition of the building. The municipal intention is to rehabilitate it and dedicate it to explaining the history of the train in the town.
Assumpció Castellví, mayor of L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, emphasizes that at that point there are still remains of the old railway area. Among them, she mentions a section of tracks, a signal, and watchtowers that were not removed during the dismantling.
"Other railway elements have been preserved there, such as a section of tracks, a signal, or watchtowers that were not removed during the dismantling" - Assumpció Castellví, mayor of L'Hospitalet de l'Infant
In parallel, the council will begin works in the coming days on the square in front of the station to build an e-bike center. The facility will function as a tourist information point, an electric bicycle rental area, and a rest area connected to the greenway.
It has also requested Adif to cede a wagon to install it next to Torn beach, at the start of the route. The municipal proposal is completed with other support elements for the route, such as the Miami Platja restaurant wagon, planned at the intersection of Avenida Berlín and Paseo Mediterrani.
The greenway agreement sets a 20-year lease for 1,800 euros per year
The plenary session of the Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant City Council unanimously approved the lease agreement with Adif for the greenway. The agreement sets an annual cost of 1,800 euros for 5.5 kilometers of route.
The expected duration is 20 years, with an option to extend for another 10. The entry into force will be pending Adif completing the corresponding works.
Mont-roig maintains a different roadmap with its old station, also inaugurated in 1865 and today unused. The city council prioritizes closing the greenway agreement with Adif first and will postpone the decision on the building until that agreement is signed.
From the town hall, they point out that the future of the station will be addressed in similar terms to those of L'Hospitalet. At the same time, Cambrils and Mont-roig are finalizing their respective agreements with Adif with the intention of signing them before summer.
The agreement approved in Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant affects 5.5 kilometers of track, establishes a rent of 1,800 euros annually, and foresees an initial term of 20 years extendable for another 10.
