The old bus station of Lleida has definitively closed its doors after decades of service and last Sunday was the last day of activity in these facilities. Since this Monday, all lines already operate from the new station located in Príncep de Viana.
The change has been completed after several weeks of transition, in which both spaces have operated in parallel to facilitate the transfer of routes and users. La Paeria maintains that the process has developed without serious incidents, beyond some specific mobility situations detected during the adaptation.
The service remains concentrated in Príncep de Viana
The new station assumes from today the entirety of the bus operation, once the closure of the old facility has concluded. The progressive transfer has allowed to maintain the service while the change of location was being completed.
With this step, Lleida leaves behind an infrastructure that has been for years one of the reference points of interurban transport in the city. The closure puts an end to an era and opens another in the organization of mobility linked to the bus.
Without immediate use for the old enclosure
For now, no short-term use is planned for the old station. Lleida City Council has launched an ideas competition to decide the future of the space, with the intention of defining a new utility for this urban area.
The objective of the project is to concretize a multifunctional facility that can host social, cultural or service uses. The architectural competition will also incorporate the proposals previously gathered in a participatory process open to the citizenry.
The choice of the project, at the end of the year
The municipal forecast is to choose the winning proposal by the end of this year. Until then, the old site remains awaiting an urban redefinition that will mark its next stage, while bus activity is now definitively centralized in Príncep de Viana.
