Lleida approves 600,000 euros for accommodation, showers and dining room for seasonal workers

The plenary session of the Lleida Provincial Council approved this Thursday unanimously the Economic Cooperation Plan for this year's agricultural campaign, with an allocation of 600,000 euros intended to cover the hiring and maintenance of seasonal workers in different municipalities of the demarcation.

The item will serve to cover resources linked to the care of seasonal workers, among them accommodation, showers or dining service, at a time when several city councils are again preparing the reception and monitoring device for the fruit campaign.

La Paeria concentrates the largest allocation

Within the approved distribution, the Paeria de Lleida will receive 195,000 euros, the highest amount of the allocation. The rest, 405,000 euros, will be distributed among other municipalities, especially from Baix Segre, where the agricultural campaign has a particularly relevant weight.

The distribution of these funds will be made based on three criteria. 70% will depend on the hectares in production foreseen in 2025 for crops such as apricots, cherry trees, nectarines, banana trees, peach trees, apple trees, pear trees, and plum trees. Another 25% will be allocated based on the number of contracts signed last year. The remaining 5% will be calculated according to the number of places in shelters and publicly owned selection spaces.

Support also to the Consell del Segrià

The agreement also includes aid of more than 70,000 euros for the Consell del Segrià, with the aim of guaranteeing safety in the deployment of workers during the campaign.

The approval went ahead with the favorable vote of all groups, although during the debate the PP deputy Joan Simeon expressed his disagreement with the most important aid being assigned to the Lleida City Council. Despite that criticism, the plan was validated and will allow activating the economic resources with which local administrations face one of the periods of greatest care and organizational pressure in the fruit-growing regions of Ponent.
