The province of Lleida registered a decrease of 2.78% in the number of unemployed people during the month of April. The data published this Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor confirms that 414 fewer people appear on the unemployment lists compared to the previous month.

This reduction occurs in a complex seasonal context for the local economy. The closure of the ski season in the Pyrenees caused the loss of 527 jobs, a factor that usually strains employment figures at this time.

Tourism compensates for the end of snow

The Easter holidays, spread between March and April, acted as a counterweight to the end of winter activity. The influx of visitors made it possible to absorb part of the labor impact generated by the closure of the mountain slopes.

The services sector concentrates the largest part of the negative variation with 311 more unemployed. It is followed by agriculture with 62, construction with 19, and industry with 17 in the sectoral breakdown.

Currently there are 15,360 people unemployed in the Lleida regions. This figure places the unemployment rate 3.95% below that registered in the same month of the previous year.

Year-on-year affiliation growth

Social Security has 4,491 more affiliates than in April of last year. This represents a positive variation of 2.16% which reflects the recovery of the productive fabric over the last twelve months.

However, the monthly comparison shows a slight contraction. There are 527 fewer contributors than in March, which is equivalent to a variation of -0.25% mainly due to the seasonality of winter-related contracts.

Lleida's behavior aligns with the general trend in Catalonia. Unemployment in the autonomous community fell by 2.77% with 8,949 fewer unemployed people throughout the territory.

Barcelona leads the absolute reduction with 6,035 fewer unemployed and a drop of 2.50%. Tarragona registers a decrease of 3.82% with 1,448 fewer unemployed, while Girona decreases by 3.78% with 1,052 fewer unemployed.

The duality between the end of the snow campaign and the Easter boost defines the current labor map. The balance finally leans towards the reduction of unemployment despite the inherent seasonality of the territory.
