The Figueres Guàrdia Urbana has incorporated two Taser-10 model Tasers to reinforce security in the municipality. Six officers have completed specific training for the use of these devices, which allow for up to five consecutive discharges and reaching targets at a distance of fifteen meters.

Devices Equipped with Camera and Usage Protocol

The new Taser guns feature a body camera that automatically activates when the weapon is used and records the sixty seconds prior to the intervention. The objective is to provide legal certainty and transparency in each action. The head of the Guàrdia Urbana, Lluís Lupiañez, has explained that these devices will only be used in specific situations, especially when dealing with agitated or upset individuals.

"The objective is to guarantee the physical integrity of the person, of the citizens, and of the officers" - Lluís Lupiañez, head of the Guàrdia Urbana of Figueres

Lupiañez has emphasized that the Taser is an adequate and effective tool, although it does not replace standard-issue weapons. Furthermore, he has underlined that mediation and dialogue will continue to be the priority before resorting to its use

"We will always seek dialogue, mediation, and to find a solution before using these devices" - Lluís Lupiañez

Modernization of Police Resources

The incorporation of Taser guns is part of a modernization plan approved at the municipal plenary session in October 2024, with the support of all groups except the CUP. The agreement also included the acquisition of metal detectors and the approval of a specific protocol for the correct use of these devices.

The mayor of Figueres, Jordi Masquef, has insisted on the need to provide the police force with more material and human resources to improve coexistence in the city. Masquef has emphasized that law and order are non-negotiable in Figueres

Upcoming Measures in Urban Security

The council plans new security measures for 2026. Among them, the installation of license plate reader cameras at the main road accesses, video surveillance systems in the city center, and the opening of an anti-squatting office. The objective is to build a safer city and guarantee neighborly coexistence.

"It is a key year in terms of security and the message we want to send is clear and unambiguous: order and law in this city are non-negotiable and, therefore, we will not tolerate occupations or disruptive behaviors that affect the good coexistence among neighbors. Whoever wants to live outside the law has no place in Figueres" - Jordi Masquef, mayor of Figueres

With the arrival of these new devices and the forecast of future investments, Figueres reinforces its commitment to modernizing police resources and protecting public spaces.
