The Ministry of Territory will allocate between five and ten million euros to stabilize the roadway of the C-28 at the Bonaigua pass. This investment responds to the recent earth movements registered at this crucial point that connects Pallars Sobirà with Val d'Aran.
The department completes urgent works in fifteen days
Within a maximum of fifteen days, the specific actions must be finalized. The works will be processed urgently and will focus exclusively on the section between the Beret access and the Cap del Port. The priority is to guarantee road safety immediately after the incidents that occurred in recent months.
The department attributes these geological problems to the abundance of rain and snow accumulated during the past winter and spring. These extreme weather conditions have weakened the ground to the point of causing instability in the road platform.
Last February, a large landslide forced the closure of the connection between both regions for several days. Since then, the situation has generated strong concern among residents and local authorities due to the dependence on this single communication route.
"We demand immediate security measures and investment" - Carlos Isús, president of the Consell Comarcal del Pallars Sobirà
This Monday, several mayors from the area and the president of the county council gathered at the affected section to demand definitive solutions. Their presence at the scene underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for a swift and effective institutional response.
While the works are being defined, the Generalitat de Catalunya monitors the land twenty-four hours a day. Technical personnel remain on-site to monitor any new movement and guarantee the opening of the road whenever conditions permit.
A preliminary study will assess the construction of the Bonaigua tunnel
In parallel with the stabilization works, the department will commission a preliminary feasibility study. This document will serve to assess the construction of the Bonaigua tunnel, a structural option that until now had been discarded by the administration.
This paradigm shift indicates a willingness to seek long-term solutions for a historic black spot. The possibility of a tunnel could definitively eliminate the risks associated with inclement weather at this high altitude.
The instability does not only affect the C-28. On Monday night, a rockfall occurred on the N-260 in Viu de Llevata, near the entrance to the existing tunnel. The road was temporarily closed but reopened to traffic the following morning.
State Highways will inspect the Viu de Llevata point tomorrow to assess the damage and determine the causes of the landslide. This inspection is part of the usual monitoring of state-owned roads that cross the Pyrenees.
The Generalitat de Catalunya plans to draft a project this year to suppress the Viu tunnel. The works for this new infrastructure, budgeted at one million euros, are planned to begin in 2027.
