The 5.9-kilometer stretch of the N-340 as it passes through Mont-roig del Camp, up to the intersection with the T-323 in the province of Tarragona, heads the list of the most dangerous points on the entire state road network according to the latest iRAP 2022-2024 report.
Maximum risk on the N-340 in Mont-roig del Camp
The risk index for drivers on this stretch reaches 200.9 points, the highest figure recorded in the study presented by the RACC. Between 2022 and 2024, three serious or fatal accidents have been recorded in just six kilometers of this road. This segment of the N-340 is the only one in Catalonia that ranks among the top ten in the national danger ranking.
Comparison with other critical points of the State
The second most dangerous stretch is located on the N-6 in León, with a risk score of 160. It is followed by the N-110 in Segovia, with 7.5 kilometers and a danger index of 144. The N-340 also appears in the province of Castellón, in a stretch of 11.4 kilometers between the limit of Valencia and Castellón and the junction with the N-225, where up to five fatalities or serious injuries have occurred.
Conventional roads, the greatest risk
The ten sections with the highest risk on the State Road Network correspond to conventional roads, single carriageway, and with a single lane per direction. The study indicates that the risk on these roads is almost four times higher than on high-capacity roads.
iRAP Report Global Data
The iRAP report, prepared for 24 years, has analyzed 3,595 sections of the State Road Network, totaling 26,470 kilometers. This network represents 16% of the total length of Spanish roads and handles 53% of national traffic. In the three-year period 2022-2024, 3,873 accidents with fatalities or serious injuries have been recorded on the XCE. Of these, 1,192 were fatal accidents with 1,341 deaths and 2,681 serious accidents with a toll of 3,566 seriously injured.
The study concludes that almost 12% of the 26,500 kilometers of the state network present a high or very high risk of suffering a serious or fatal accident. Since 2002, the risk map of the Catalan road network has been published following the methodology of this organization, formerly known as EuroRAP.
