The Department of Health maintains in the Can Fornaca urbanization, in Riudarenes, the prohibition of using tap water for drinking and cooking due to exceeding legal limits of fluoride and uranium. The restriction remains in force and the water can only be used for personal hygiene and other domestic uses.
Almost two years after the first municipal recommendation, the area continues without guarantees of drinking water. The paradox is that the regional administration has financed measures to ensure the supply, but the structural solution remains pending and a possible connection to the Ter-Llobregat network has not even begun to be studied.
Health maintained the restriction after detecting 35 micrograms per liter of uranium
During 2024, controls detected uranium values of around 35 micrograms per liter in the water from Can Fornaca. That result led the health authority to require the Riudarenes City Council and the managing company Prodaisa to inform the affected population.
The situation also reached the Parliament after a question registered by En Comú Podem about the lack of drinking water guarantees in the urbanization. The Government's response confirmed that the health restriction remained in force.
Since 2017, the Catalan Water Agency has allocated 113,803 euros to finance tanker trucks. That system allows for ensuring the supply and reducing the concentration of parameters that prevent consumption.
The Generalitat leaves the water treatment plant in the hands of the city council
The Generalitat de Catalunya limits its role to technical advice. The promotion of the study, project, and execution of a water treatment plant corresponds to the council.
At the same time, the regional administration is analyzing the feasibility of installing uranium and fluoride absorption plants and studying alternative underground resources. External connections have also been evaluated to solve the supply problem.
In December 2025, the municipality asked Aigües Ter Llobregat for a feasibility study to connect to the Ter-Llobregat network, but the work has not started and there is no scheduled date. The connection with the Pasteral artery was ruled out because it does not supply drinking water, and the option from the Tordera desalination plant was rejected due to the length of the route and the complex orography.
While the search for a solution remains open, the city council contracted improvement works for the low-voltage networks in October 2025. The contract sets the maximum execution period as October 23, 2026, and the justification deadline as December 23, 2026.
