The Girona City Council will bring to this Monday's plenary session the start of the procedure to extinguish the concession of the bar-terrace in Migdia park, awarded 25 years ago.

The decision opens the way to the legal end of the concession and leaves the council with three options regarding the space: to recover it, to re-tender it, or to establish another model.

The concession of Migdia Park expires this September after 25 years

The tender was approved in June 2001 and the award to Ecobar Girona SL arrived in September of that same year.

That contract had a duration of 25 years and expires this September, with an annual fee set then at two million pesetas, about 12,000 euros.

The company also paid nine million pesetas, about 54,000 euros, for the construction of the restrooms and the technical projects.

The occupied space corresponds to the interior part of a circular building in the pond area, covered by a semicircular shade porch, with a surface area of approximately 350 square meters.

The service was to be provided throughout the year within the opening hours of the Parc del Migdia.

The concession included the bar, the facilities, the public restrooms, and maintenance, always at the concessionaire's risk.

That park was urbanized in the nineties on the grounds of the old military barracks.

The plenary session rejected in May 2022 the extension requested by the company

Ecobar Girona SL requested an extension of three years and nine months due to the impact of the March 2020 pandemic.

An April 2022 report concluded that the conditions for extending the contract were not met.

The municipal plenary session of May 2022 dismissed the petition with the votes of the then governing team, formed by Junts per Catalunya and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, and Guanyem, which was then in opposition and now leads the municipal government.

The company then filed a motion for reconsideration against that agreement, which the town council rejected in July 2023.

The procedure that now reaches the plenary session opens the legal end of the current concession and forces a decision on what use the space will have when it expires this September.
