SOS Costa Brava has filed two administrative complaints regarding episodes of pollution detected in the Castell-Cap Roig area, in Baix Empordà, and has requested that the administrations investigate both the origin of the discharges and their environmental impact.
The environmental federation focuses on a contradiction that directly affects the coast of Girona. While known issues persist in the sanitation infrastructure, it maintains that no administration has formally initiated actions to assign responsibility, despite it being a protected natural area.
The entity requested a review of the treatment plant serving five municipalities
One of the complaints is directed at the Catalan Water Agency for possible deficiencies in the sanitation and treatment system. SOS Costa Brava requests that it investigate the origin and scope of the discharges and analyze the operation of the Vall-llobrega i Palamós wastewater treatment plant.
This facility treats the wastewater from Calonge, Palamós, Vall-llobrega, Mont-ras, and Palafrugell. The request includes on-site inspections and a review of the facilities to clarify what has gone wrong in the system.
Furthermore, the complaints demand the determination of responsibilities and the restoration of the affected areas, along with the application of sanctioning and compensatory measures if applicable.
The second complaint requests action on the protected habitats of Castell-Cap Roig
The other complaint has been filed with the Directorate General of Environmental Policies and Natural Environment. SOS Costa Brava demands that this department assess the impact on the protected habitats of the Castell-Cap Roig natural interest area and activate its conservation and, where appropriate, sanctioning powers.
The federation links this request to the repetition of pollution episodes in the area and to previously known issues with the infrastructure. In its view, the lack of formal action to date has left the extent of the damage and who should bear it unclear.
At the same time, the entity warns that halting urban growth in the municipalities connected to this infrastructure is a necessary condition to avoid further pressure on the system. Within this framework, it has warned that authorizing new urban sectors, housing, and tourist developments without first guaranteeing the actual sanitation capacity exacerbates the risk to sensitive natural areas on the Girona coast.
SOS Costa Brava demands that future planning incorporate the real environmental limits of the territory and that the protection of natural spaces be set as a prerequisite for growth in Calonge, Palamós, Vall-llobrega, Mont-ras, and Palafrugell.
