The Guardia Civil has warned in the last few hours about the incorrect use of the V-16 beacon on roads in Catalonia, especially on high-density roads such as the B-23 as it passes through Esplugues or the AP-7 in the Girona area. The police force recalls that the beacon does not replace emergency lights and that using it partially may result in sanctions.

Warnings about signaling in case of breakdown or accident

In situations of breakdown, accident, or immobilization on the road, the first visible warning for other drivers must always be the activation of the four hazard lights. Not activating the hazard lights when the vehicle is stopped or not signaling a sudden braking that generates danger can result in fines of up to 200 euros. Trànsit's recommendation is clear: "V-16 + hazard lights, always together".

The use of the V-16 beacon in isolation or as the sole signaling device does not comply with current regulations. Furthermore, the Civil Guard insists that using emergency lights as an excuse for improper stops, double-parking, or traffic jams without a real immobilization may lead to fines ranging from 80 to 200 euros.

Fines for non-approved devices and usage recommendations

The proliferation of warning beacons marketed as "valid" or "official" without being approved has generated confusion among drivers. Not carrying the V-16 beacon or carrying one that does not comply with regulations is punishable by a fine of 80 euros. Officers recall the importance of acquiring approved devices and verifying their validity before driving on urban or interurban roads in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Girona, or Tarragona.

To guarantee maximum visibility and safety, it is recommended to store the beacon in an accessible place inside the vehicle and place it in the highest possible point, preferably on the roof, immediately activating the four turn signals. Adequate signaling is key to avoiding accidents and fines on any section of the Catalan road network.
