The Guàrdia Civil is investigating an alleged corruption network at the Fitó landfill, located next to the C-17 in the municipality of Seva. The police report states that the scheme allegedly evaded taxes and caused pollution in the area's land. The case, under investigation, is based on a police report exceeding 500 pages.
Statements of a former employee and practices under suspicion
A former employee, identified as Ramon, claims he received direct orders to dispose of drums and canisters with construction additives and toxic products. According to his testimony, the instruction was clear and without room for doubt.
"They gave me orders to get rid of construction additive and toxic drums and canisters that were bothering them" - Ramon, former employee
Ramon recounts that he transported these waste materials in his own van and was in charge of burying them in the mountain, following his superiors' instructions. The former employee assures that he had to make sure everything was well covered and hidden, as he risked his job if he did not comply with the orders.
"They told me to throw it in the nursery, that nobody would see me there... And I did, I risked my job"
With the objective of minimizing the damage, he states that he preferred to bury the well-sealed drums underground instead of directly pouring the corrosive liquids, hoping that the toxic substances would thus be at least partially sealed.
The Fitó landfill and the Seprona investigation
The Fitó landfill began operating as such in 2018 and was designed for the management of inert waste. However, the Servei de Protecció de la Naturalesa (Seprona) of the Guàrdia Civil maintains that the facility has allegedly received tons of waste without authorization, including hazardous materials and prohibited waste.
The Seprona report details that the place would have become the epicenter of an alleged scheme to maximize profits through the adulteration of documentation and the evasion of the fee for waste disposal. Ramon describes the business as very lucrative.
"It was a very lucrative business"
The former employee describes how many trucks arrived to unload, some of which let out toxic liquids and even slurry. On occasion, he observed asbestos cement sheets, tires, plastics, and full canisters mixed among the construction waste. According to his testimony, no one checked the content of the trucks and the vehicles unloaded and left without control.
Document Forgery and Health Risks
Ramon denounces that it was habitual to create invented delivery notes for trucks that never entered the nursery. On the surface of the landfill, foam, yellow liquids, ash, sulfur, and other materials of various natures frequently appeared.
The former employee recalls that the workers were exposed to a large amount of dust and that they requested to know the level of chromium, a pollutant present in the work environment. According to him, the response they received was that the parameters were within the norm and they were not provided with further information.
"They told us that the parameters were within the norm and nothing more"
