The cost of maintaining a home in the province of Girona reached 1,340.72 euros per month in 2025, which represents a 13% increase compared to the previous year. This increase places Girona as the second most expensive demarcation in Catalonia, only behind Barcelona, where the monthly average is 1,368.97 euros.

Household spending absorbs more than half of income in Girona

According to the III Housing Barometer Planet Owner, prepared by the Mutua Propietarios Group, the household bill represents 52.9% of income in Girona. This percentage is the highest in Catalonia along with Tarragona, where the impact on income is 50.5%. In Barcelona, the weight is 41.1% and in Lleida 43.6%.

The report details that the sharpest increase in Girona corresponds to the shopping basket, which rises to 465 euros per month, 27.2% more than the previous year. Energy expenses, which include water, electricity, and fuel, also experience a significant rise of 24.9%, reaching an average of 236 euros. The cost of housing in Girona increases by 1.6% and stands at 640 euros per month.

Catalan and state comparison

The Catalan average for the shopping basket is 456.21 euros per month, surpassed by Girona (465.10) and Barcelona (460.09), while Lleida (441.21) and Tarragona (429.89) remain below. Regarding energy costs, the Catalan average is 181.65 euros, notably lower than Girona's.

The average cost of housing in Catalonia stands at 704.27 euros per month, with a rental expense (716.36) higher than that of a mortgage (695). At the state level, the average household ticket is 1,230.34 euros. Communities such as Madrid (1,384), Catalonia (1,342) and the Balearic Islands (1,260) exceed this figure, while Navarra (969) and Extremadura (1,021) record the lowest amounts.

Difficulties to face the basic expenses

The barometer indicates that three out of ten Catalans have some difficulty in facing the total household expenses. The situation is especially complicated among young people, large households, people who live in rented accommodation, and those with low incomes. The report warns that a household that depends on a single minimum wage may have to allocate practically all income to cover basic expenses.

The study also detects changes in savings habits. Options such as postponing repairs or cutting energy consumption decrease, and a strategy focused on daily life gains weight, such as buying more private label brands and fewer fresh products.
