The Girona City Council acknowledges that the Ferran Puig ring road is one of the areas with the highest atmospheric pollution in the city. During an informational meeting with residents, the mayor, Lluc Salellas, stated "It is the area where there is the most pollution in all of Girona". One option on the table to reduce traffic on this road axis is to move towards a single direction of travel, according to previous studies commissioned by the council.
Any decision must be linked to a more global review of the mobility of sectors such as Jaume I, Mercadal or Marquès de Camps square.
"It is the area with the most pollution in all of Girona" - Lluc Salellas, mayor of Girona
A municipal report released by Diari de Girona proposes prohibiting the northbound direction towards La Devesa and the Güell River to create a bidirectional bike lane. The local government is also working on a modification of the Tomàs Mieres 1 and 2 areas, next to the train tracks. The current planning, in effect since 2002, stipulates that buildings near the railway must set back to leave a minimum strip of 15 meters.
The mayor defended that this operation would help reduce pollution due to the current lack of ventilation from tall buildings and narrow streets. The neighbors claimed during the meeting the need to reduce pollution, denounce the lack of trees, the dirt under the tracks, and the excessive speed of vehicles. The intention to extend Sèquia street to Bernat Boades with a more pedestrian-friendly passage was also addressed.
The municipal government pointed out complementary measures such as studying new green parking areas for residents. These initiatives seek to improve air quality and public space in one of the nerve centers of the Girona capital.
