Adif has awarded the renovation works of the plaça d'Espanya de Girona to the company Construcciones Rubau SL for an amount of 2,964,750.33 euros. This figure represents a reduction of almost 700,000 euros compared to the initial starting price set at 3,623,166.66 euros.
The execution of the works has an estimated duration of four months. The rehabilitation tasks will focus on transforming an esplanade that has remained unused since 2017, after the demolition of the old bus station of the Central Park.
The ownership dispute delayed the project for years
The progress of this intervention was blocked for a long period due to a dispute over land ownership between the council and Adif. Both institutions resolved the dispute through an exchange agreement signed in May of last year.
The bidding process for the work began in July of the previous year. In October 2025 it was made public that eleven companies had submitted their offers to bid for the contract.
The administration initially disqualified Rubau Tarres SA for failing to meet administrative requirements. Later, it excluded the temporary joint venture formed by José Antonio Romero Polo SAU and Aglomerats Girona after considering its economic offer of 2,860,490.07 euros to be anomalous.
Construcciones Rubau SL obtained the best overall score with 93.87 points. The company stood out especially in the criteria quantifiable by mathematical formulas. For its part, Copisa Constructura Pirenaica received a higher valuation in aspects evaluable by value judgment.
The square will prioritize pedestrians and expand the bike lane
The mayor of Girona Lluc Salellas announced that the works will begin this summer. The councilor foresees that the square will be fully rehabilitated before the end of 2026.
"We will act comprehensively throughout the square with the aim of creating a clear space for approaching the station, creating new pathways for people and green areas, thus prioritizing pedestrians" - Lluc Salellas, mayor of Girona
The reform includes the pedestrianization of the final stretch of Bailèn street. This measure will be executed through the construction of an overpass for vehicles. The turn from Barcelona street towards the station will also be prohibited, and the direction of circulation of Pierre Vilar street will be changed.
The project includes the construction of a bike lane in front of the station. This new infrastructure will provide continuity to the existing one on Ferràn Soldevila i Zubiburu street, which comes from plaça Poeta Marquina.
Adif has awarded in parallel the consulting services for execution management and technical assistance for the control of the works. The company Extremera LED Asociados SLU will carry out these tasks for 80,615.26 euros.
Lluc Salellas affirmed that the square has been in an undesirable state for too many years. The mayor stated his intention to transform the environment into a space full of life before the end of his term.
