The internal basins of Catalonia reach today, January 8, 85.71% of their total capacity. This figure represents a slight increase of 0.08% compared to the previous day and confirms the upward trend in water reserves in the region.

The Ter-Llobregat System and the Reservoir Situation

The Ter-Llobregat system, which supplies the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and the Solsonès region, is made up of five key reservoirs. Sau, in Vilanova de Sau (Osona), Susqueda, in Osor (Selva), la Baells, in Cercs (Berguedà), la Llosa del Cavall, in Navès (Solsonès), and Sant Ponç, in Clariana de Cardener (Solsonès), maintain high levels after the rains of recent months.

Outside this system, four other reservoirs also show remarkable figures. Darnius Boadella, in Alt Empordà, Foix, in Castellet i la Gornal (Alt Penedès), Siurana, in Cornudella de Montsant (Priorat), and Riudecanyes, in Baix Camp, have contributed to the generalized increase in reserves

End of the drought and recovery of historical levels

On April 5, 2025, the drought in Catalonia was declared over, after the reservoirs of the internal basins exceeded 60% of their capacity by the end of March. The drought situation threshold in Catalonia is set at 60% of capacity, a limit that has been surpassed with the current data.

Spring 2025 was decisive in raising reserves above 80%, an increase of more than 20% compared to the average of the previous five years. Recent rains allowed Catalan reservoirs to recover 80% of their capacity before the end of the year, a figure not seen since early July

Comparison with previous years and ACA monitoring

A few months ago, Catalan reservoirs surpassed the 56% capacity mark for the first time since March 2022. In 2019, according to data from the Catalan Water Agency, practically all reservoirs, except for Siurana, began the year above 80% of their capacity

The ACA publishes daily reports on the status of reservoirs, allowing for constant monitoring of the evolution of water reserves in Catalonia. The control and management of these resources remain a priority to guarantee supply in the main metropolitan areas and regions.
