Girona City Council has raised the speed limit from 30 to 40 km/h on the stretch of Pedret street where the radar is installed. The modification has been approved by decree and entails that the speed camera adapts to the new speed limit at this entry point to the neighborhood.

The change affects the radar located next to the traffic light that is after the access curve to Pedret, once past the industrial warehouses, at the height of number 146 of Pedret street. In that environment are located the civic center, two bus stops and the Ter river.

Change of criterion on a point that the council considered sensitive

Until now, the council had defended maintaining the 30 km/h restriction on this stretch. At the end of 2025, the Mobility councilor, Isaac Sànchez, argued that on urban roads like Pedret's, with one lane per direction, the traffic regulations set the expected speed at 30 km/h.

The municipal official also then justified the continuity of that limit for road safety reasons, considering that it is a sensitive point.

With the decision now adopted, the City Council leaves behind the 30 km/h limit that was in force on this stretch since 2021.

The decrease in fines, among the keys to the decision

One of the arguments that explain the change of criterion is the evolution of the sanctions registered by the Pedret radar, which has shown a progressive and sustained fall in recent months.

The maximum was reached in the week of October 27 to November 2, with 640 fines. By the end of November, complaints had already dropped to 470 in one week. During December, records mostly hovered around 400 weekly sanctions, although between December 29 and January 4 there was a rebound to 431.

Then, in January and February, the figures were 333, 296, 330, 323 and 293 weekly complaints. The last available data, corresponding to the week of February 16 to 22, is 266 sanctions, the lowest figure of the entire series.

The comparison between the peak of 640 fines and that last record of 266 represents a decrease of 374 complaints, close to 58% less. If the first week of the series is taken as a reference, with 528 fines, the reduction is close to 50%.

The neighbors now endorse raising the limit

The decision comes after the neighborhood association of Pedret, which in its day had demanded the installation of the radar, considers that the measure has already fulfilled its function. According to them, the device has served to raise awareness among drivers and curb speed in this stretch, and that is why they now endorse that the limit goes from 30 to 40 km/h.

The Pedret radar is part of the package of four speed cameras that the Girona City Council launched last August 13. The other three are located next to the Maristes school, in the Güell hinge and just after the intersection between the Barcelona road and Creu street.
