A man was murdered this Saturday in the Marina de Port neighborhood, in Barcelona, in a new crime that has reopened the political clash over security in the city.
Tension arises from the figure that municipal opposition groups are already handling. Daniel Sirera, president of the PP group in the Barcelona City Council, stated that this is the fifth murder of the year in the Catalan capital and accused the mayor, Jaume Collboni, and the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, of failing to guarantee security.
Junts and PP increased pressure on Collboni after the crime
Jordi Martí Galbis, president of the municipal group of Junts per Catalunya, demanded the urgent appearance of Collboni after the murder in Marina de Port. The Junts leader described the situation in Barcelona as "dantesque".
"Barcelona has become a city where anything is possible, with homicides, organized crime, a drug capital, and an international refuge for mafias" - Jordi Martí Galbis, president of the municipal group of Junts per Catalunya, Barcelona City Council
Sirera linked the crime to a deterioration of security in the city and placed the case within a broader sequence by speaking of the fifth murder of the year. Furthermore, the municipal leader of the PP called for the resignation of Albert Batlle, councilor for Security of the Barcelona City Council.
The PP also demanded more police, more authority, and a zero-tolerance policy against criminals.
Vox compared Collboni's term with Colau's
Gonzalo de Oro, president of the municipal group of Vox, assured that Collboni has made Barcelona a more insecure city than during Ada Colau's term. In his criticism, he accused both of having left the streets in the hands of criminals and of having left residents defenseless.
"Collboni has managed to make Barcelona more insecure than with Colau" - Gonzalo de Oro, president of the municipal group of Vox, Barcelona City Council
The right-wing opposition thus hardened its discourse a few hours after the crime in Marina de Port. Vox argued that Barcelona needs order and a "iron fist" and presented its party as the formation capable of implementing that change.
Among the more specific requests made after the murder, Daniel Sirera demanded the departure of Albert Batlle from the head of the Security councilorship of the Barcelona City Council.
