El Pumarejo has reopened in the Centre neighborhood of L'Hospitalet after almost eight months closed due to a municipal requirement that forced the venue to be adapted to concert regulations. The return to activity took place on Saturday, May 9, with a party alongside artists and people linked to the project.
The reopening comes after a forced halt in a space set up by young, non-profit volunteers and turned into a meeting point for Barcelona's underground scene. The tension of the process has been precisely there, in keeping a community project alive while undertaking technical and costly renovations to remain open.
The hall reopened after eight months of works
The temporary closure was communicated on September 13, 2025. From then on, the venue undertook a complete renovation of the premises to comply with the current regulations required for concert halls.
The works included the improvement of emergency exits, the installation of firewalls to prevent the spread of fires to neighboring warehouses, and the total renovation of the low-voltage electrical installation. The process also incorporated architectural work and professional engineering to adjust the space to legal requirements.
Around 20,000 euros were raised by the crowdfunding campaign.
To that collection was added a solidarity party at Razzmatazz, key to completing the financing of the reform. The venue has been able to reopen after that sustained economic and technical effort for months.
Andrea Marcos, coordinator of El Pumarejo, pointed out the difficulty of the process due to the accumulated workload during the closure.
"The reopening process has been very hard, very frustrating and full of work, but also rewarding" - Andrea Marcos, coordinator of El Pumarejo
Marcos adds that this tour has also served to measure the importance of the venue and the community created around it. In its description, El Pumarejo functions as a home for many people and as a horizontal and open space where one can play, DJ, sing, dance, or promote proposals that have no place in larger institutions or venues.
The May 9th party brought together artists trained in the hall
The reopening celebration brought together artists and friends of the project, many of them linked to its early musical stages within the venue. Some are now performing across Europe, but they returned to participate in a night planned as a reunion with the space.
Gal·la Maculet defined El Pumarejo as an incubator of artists.
Among those who attended the reopening, Gal·la Maculet described the venue as a connection point for Barcelona's underground music scene. Andrea Conde maintained that reopening is equivalent to recovering a home lost for quite some time, while Ariana Meléndez summarized the venue's significance in a single idea, community.
With the return to activity, El Pumarejo recovers its usual programming as a showcase for new talents and established artists. The reopening on Saturday, May 9, was celebrated precisely with part of that ecosystem that grew in the venue and returned to it to DJ, sing, or perform.
