Two men lost their lives after their vehicles collided head-on on the N-240 highway. The accident occurred near the municipality of Montblanc on Friday night.
The notice of the accident arrived at the emergency services at 10:04 PM. The crash occurred at kilometer 36.4 of the road, right at the junction with the C-14 in the direction of Tàrrega. Rescue teams immediately moved to the scene to assist the occupants of the two cars involved.
The deceased were residents of nearby towns
The deceased victims have been identified as a 27-year-old man, a resident of l'Espluga de Francolí, and another 50-year-old man, a resident of el Pont d'Armentera. Both drivers died at the scene of the accident due to the severity of the impacts suffered. There were no other affected individuals requiring hospital transfer, according to initial medical reports.
To attend the emergency, three patrols of the Mossos d'Esquadra were activated. Four units of the Bombers de la Generalitat worked on the tasks of extrication and stabilization of the vehicles. In addition, three units of the SEM attended the scene with psychological support for the responders and family members.
Traffic was completely interrupted in both directions. The road remained closed with marked detours until 01:45 AM. Authorities restricted traffic again on Saturday morning to allow for the necessary police investigations to clarify the exact causes of the accident.
The death toll on roads rises to 38
This double death raises to 38 the total number of people who have lost their lives on Catalan roads so far this year. The Servei Català de Trànsit has released the breakdown of these fatalities registered to date.
Of the 38 deceased, 16 were motorcycle users. Also counted among the victims are 3 cyclists and 5 pedestrians. The remainder corresponds to occupants of passenger cars and other vehicles involved in traffic accidents on the road network of Catalonia.
