The teaching staff of eleven public schools in Salou and Vila-seca will not schedule outings or camps outside of school hours during the 2026-27 academic year until educational conditions in Catalonia improve. The measure affects schools in both municipalities and is part of a protest extended to more than a thousand Catalan schools.

The decision places the conflict in one of the most common activities in the school calendar. Teachers maintain that these educational proposals are maintained with a high organizational burden, added responsibility, and unpaid hours, while they demand more staff, fewer students per classroom, and better spaces and resources.

In Salou, Santa Maria del Mar, Europa, Vora Mar, Salou, Cal·lípolis, Miramar, and Mestral have joined. In Vila-seca, La Canaleta, Sant Bernat Calvó, Torroja i Miret, and La Plana are participating.

The protest is added to recent strike days in Catalan public education and new mobilizations called until the end of the academic year. The next one is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27.

The staff informed families of the decision through a joint statement. In that text, they defend that they are not renouncing complementary activities by their own will, but due to the need to be able to assume them under conditions that allow them to be carried out with responsibility and coherence.

"This decision does not stem from the will to stop doing things, but from the need to be able to do things well, with responsibility, coherence, and commitment to a fairer and higher quality public education" - teaching staff of the public schools of Salou and Vila-seca

Teachers demand lower ratios and more resources after increased needs in classrooms

The teaching staff links the suspension of these extracurricular activities to an overload that goes beyond the teaching day. In their statement, they emphasize that organizing outings and camps implies a high organizational demand and unpaid hours for teachers.

Among the demands directed at the Departament d'Educació are the reduction of ratios, the hiring of more staff, the adaptation of spaces, and the reinforcement of material resources. The claim comes from centers in two municipalities with different realities, but with the same diagnosis regarding pressure in classrooms.

Furthermore, the educational sector maintains that the increase in the educational and social needs of the student body has not been accompanied by sufficient reinforcement of human and material resources. Teachers place that mismatch in the years after the pandemic and assure that the pressure on schools has grown during 2026.

The next mobilization of the educational sector is called for Wednesday, May 27.
