The Reus City Council will bring to the municipal plenary session an extension of the street cleaning and waste collection contract, with which it plans to reinforce services and finance new investments. The modification, if it receives the green light, will come into effect on June 1, 2026, and will increase the amount of the contract by 158,135.99 euros annually, including VAT.

The measure arrives as the city council adapts the waste management model to Law 7/2022, which obliges municipalities to improve the prevention and separation of domestic and commercial waste. At the same time, Reus faces changes in its urban model, with fewer underground and surface containers, which forces a readjustment of the service.

The expansion incorporates new containers and reinforces door-to-door collection

The modification of the contract includes the renewal of the compressor of the gas station of the cleaning park and the incorporation of new containers for commercial collection and for festive events.

It also foresees new bins and an emergency island to expand the door-to-door service. With that package of actions, the City Council seeks to improve the selective collection rate in the city.

Daniel Marcos, councilor for Public Works, framed the proposal within the update of municipal basic services.

The contract also expands preventive cleaning in parks and gardens

In addition to changes in waste collection, the city council plans to strengthen the syringe collection service. That device will also assume preventive and continuous cleaning tasks in parks and gardens.

The contract extension is based on the need to adjust the service to legal requirements and the new collection deployment in the city. In this context, the contract will increase by 158,135.99 euros per year once the modification comes into effect.

In parallel to this processing, the works of the 132 affordable homes in Mas Iglesias, in Reus, are in their final phase.
