The Sant Pere i Sant Pau neighborhood, in Tarragona, has reopened its Reading Point this Monday, May 25, after six years closed. The facility is back in operation in building 1C after a comprehensive renovation initiated in September and financed with an investment of 500,000 euros.
The reopening returns a local service to the neighborhood that had been inactive for six years, although the next municipal step is not through this renovated space, but through the future construction of its own library planned in the Tarragona Culture Strategic Plan.
The renovation redistributed 162 meters and added new functional spaces
The new Reading Point occupies an area of 162 square meters and has completely reorganized the interior layout. The consultation room has 50 reading places and capacity for 7,000 volumes, although the current collection is around 3,000.
In addition to the consultation area, the facility includes a children's space, an office area with eight laptops with internet access, a multipurpose room, and two outdoor areas designed for outdoor activities.
The service is attached to the Pepita Ferrer Library of Torreforta. Its collection is part of the public library network of the Public Reading System of Catalonia, so users can also access interlibrary loans.
The schedule will change between the school year and holidays
During the school period, from October to June, the center will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 PM to 8 PM, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 AM to 2 PM and from 4 PM to 8 PM, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.
During school holidays, the schedule will be Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 2 PM. The facility will be closed in August and also on January 2, 4, and 5, 2027.
During the reopening ceremony, the mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, defended the recovery of the service with a message addressed to the neighborhood's residents.
"Today we recover a space for coexistence, knowledge, and opportunities. Today we fulfill a promise that was born from active listening to the residents of the neighborhood, from understanding that culture cannot be a privilege or a distant service, but a close, everyday, and accessible right for everyone" - Rubén Viñuales, mayor of Tarragona
The Tarragona City Council now sets the construction of a library in Sant Pere i Sant Pau as its next objective, an action included in the Tarragona Culture Strategic Plan.
