The Port of Tarragona leads the provisional list of beneficiaries of the Port-Eolmar program managed by the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). The port authority has obtained the first position in this preliminary resolution that rewards projects aimed at the assembly of floating offshore wind turbines.

The entity will receive 24 million euros in public aid to execute a fundamental part of its expansion plan. This capital will be specifically allocated to the expansion of the Moll de Balears, a key infrastructure for offshore wind logistics.

The work expands the surface area by 22 hectares

The engineering project contemplates a total investment of 80 million euros for the civil works. The works will allow for the gain of 22 hectares of new operational surface with a draft of 23.5 meters. This depth is essential to accommodate floating platforms and large tonnage installation vessels.

The full financing of the initiative amounts to 120 million euros. To the public funds and the budget of the work, 40 million euros of private investment are added, which complement the economic effort necessary to adapt the port facility.

The port consolidates itself as an energy hub

This award represents a firm step towards the specialization of the Tarragona enclave in the energy transition. The facilities seek to position themselves as the main industrial hub in Catalonia for the floating offshore wind sector.

The capacity to attract private capital along with state grants validates the development model proposed by the port authority. The Moll de Balears is thus preparing to meet the technical demands of the new marine renewable industry.
