The Department of Equality and Feminism has officially classified as femicide the death of a woman registered at the Virgen de la Cinta Hospital. This administrative resolution confirms the gendered nature of the crime and raises the total number of fatal victims for this cause in Catalonia during 2026 to two.
Police intervention thwarted a lethal assault
The events originated on March 8 when the Mossos d'Esquadra went to a home to attend to an alleged case of domestic violence. The agents arrested a man on the spot considering that there were sufficient indications of his participation in the mistreatment.
The investigation kept the hypothesis of femicide open from the beginning while the victim fought for survival in the health center.
Five days after the initial intervention, the police were aware that the woman remained admitted in critical condition within the Intensive Care Unit. Her health did not manage to recover and she passed away on March 17th after nine days connected to life support machines.
Formal arrest for intentional homicide
Forensic tests ended up corroborating the direct connection between the aggression suffered and the patient's death. With this technical ruling in hand, justice moved towards the definitive criminal indictment of the suspect.
On April 27, authorities formalized the arrest of a 59-year-old man as the alleged perpetrator of a completed intentional homicide. The legal classification reflects the seriousness of events that cut short the woman's life weeks after the initial assault.
This tragedy is added to the first case registered in the current calendar.
The first victim of 2026 was a 92-year-old woman murdered in a socio-health center in the Barcelona district of San Andrés. Both deaths mark an early figure that alerts about the persistence of sexist violence in different contexts and age groups.
