Calafell and Cunit will have a shared Mossos d'Esquadra police station to reinforce security in both municipalities and alleviate the burden on the current El Vendrell police station, which covers the entire Baix Penedès.
The forecast comes at a time when both town councils are demanding more police presence due to the demographic growth of the area, while the proposed solution still depends on the Generalitat de Catalunya acquiring or expropriating the building planned for the new facilities.
Interior plans to approve the district police station in September
The Minister of the Department of the Interior, Nuria Parlon, has placed this district police station within the strategic plan of the Mossos d'Esquadra, which is scheduled for approval in September. The objective, she has stated, is to begin its implementation during the current legislature.
The project seeks to reinforce security in Calafell and Cunit and, at the same time, reduce the activity currently handled by the El Vendrell police station. That facility centralizes police services for Baix Penedès.
For some time now, the mayor of Calafell, Ramon Ferré, and the mayor of Cunit, Jaume Casañas, have been demanding this infrastructure. Both municipalities link the request to population increase and the need to increase police personnel.
The priority location is situated next to Catalunya Avenue
The location that now has priority is between Segur de Calafell and the C-31 road, in a building on Plaça Mediterrani next to Catalunya Avenue. To develop the police station, the Generalitat de Catalunya will have to buy or expropriate the property.
Ferré has linked this area with one of the points that generates the most concern in the municipality. The mayor has also announced that the town council wants to accelerate urban planning and administrative work as soon as the plan progresses.
"We will get to work quickly as we have a very important security problem on Catalunya Avenue. We are working but decisive actions are needed" - Ramon Ferré, mayor of Calafell, Calafell Town Council
The new police station will also allow for a reorganization of resources in the area. The El Vendrell station, which will continue to be the reference for the rest of the towns in the region, expects to receive a reinforcement of agents from the promotion that will finish their training at the academy in September.
That reinforcement will arrive with the completion in September of the training of the new promotion of agents destined for Mossos d'Esquadra.
