Cambrils prepares a special device to follow the solar eclipse of August 12, an event for which the Generalitat de Catalunya places the municipality within the totality strip and points it out as one of the recommended observation points.

The forecast of a large influx, both from local and international audiences, has led the City Council to set up a space for about 4,000 people in the agricultural cooperative area. The phenomenon will last a little over an hour in its different phases, but totality will barely reach one minute and nine seconds before sunset.

Cambrils will enable space for 4,000 people next to the agricultural cooperative

The council will focus the observation on this point due to its visibility conditions, its easy access, and the proximity of parking areas, located between five and 10 minutes away on foot.

In addition, the Tourism Board and the Departments of Economic Promotion and Culture are preparing complementary activities for that day and will distribute certified glasses until stocks run out.

To reinforce the organization, the City Council has asked for volunteers for August 12. The request comes in anticipation of a high attendance at one of the reference enclaves on the Tarragona coast to watch the eclipse.

The totality of the eclipse will arrive at 8:29 PM and will last 1 minute and 9 seconds

The eclipse will begin at 19:35 h in Cambrils. The totality phase is scheduled for 20:29 h and sunset will arrive at 20:58 h, so observation will be highly conditioned by a short time window at the end of the afternoon.

Civil Protection and the organizers insist that looking at the sun without adequate protection can cause serious and irreversible eye injuries. To follow the phenomenon safely, it will be essential to use glasses with a solar filter approved according to the ISO 12312-2 standard.

The Cultural Center and the Pinaret Park will host two preview activities on May 22

Before the eclipse, the municipality has scheduled two educational proposals to prepare for the observation. The first will be on Friday, May 22 at 8:00 PM in the Cultural Center.

There, Carlos Sañudo will give the talk Journey through the solar system will be given at 8:00 p.m.. Later, at 9:30 p.m., the Pinaret Park will host the visit We will explain our Night Sky.

The second activity will have limited capacity and will require prior registration at the email [email protected].
