The Reus City Council initially approved on Monday, May 25, two demolition projects in the vicinity of Carrilet Avenue with which it intends to open a new urban passage towards the center and reserve land for affordable housing.
The operation combines the elimination of properties and a disused warehouse with two different objectives in the same area. On the one hand, to remove barriers between the Carrilet neighborhood and the urban core. On the other hand, to prepare a plot for a development of about 40 apartments within the Pla 50,000 of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Reus will demolish three properties on Balmes Street to open a passage to the center
The first of the projects affects numbers 30, 32, and 34 on Balmes Street, next to Carrilet Avenue. The council plans to demolish these properties to create a new urban route that will improve pedestrian connection between the neighborhood and the city center.
After the demolition, the space will be urbanized with a children's play area presided over by a pyramid, new trees, and different types of paving. The intervention seeks to give visual continuity to the sidewalks and facilitate pedestrian mobility at a point that urban planning has been addressing for years as an outstanding objective.
The planned investment for this action amounts to 439,054 euros, and the set timeline is five months. Two months will be dedicated to demolition and three to the urbanization of the new resulting space.
The warehouse at number 16 will be used for a development of about 40 apartments
In parallel, the Reus City Council also approved the demolition of a disused warehouse located at number 16 on Carrilet Avenue. The plot that remains free will be offered to the Generalitat de Catalunya to promote affordable housing in the second call of the Pla 50,000.
The initial forecast points to a development of about 40 affordable apartments on that plot. The project thus links an urban renewal operation in Carrilet with the incorporation of new protected residential supply at one of the entrances to the center of Reus.
For this second action, the planned budget is 400,495 euros, and the estimated execution period for the demolition of the warehouse is two months.
