The Reus City Council will bring to the municipal plenary session an extension of the street cleaning and waste collection contract that will increase the cost of the service by 158,135.99 euros per year to reinforce citizen attention and adapt municipal management to new legal requirements.
The modification arrives while the council maintains already implemented services, but at the same time needs to correct operational shortcomings and update part of the system. Among these are the extension of door-to-door collection to 206 more homes, the installation of smart locks on containers, and the replacement of the broken compressor at the municipal gas station, on which more than 95% of the cleaning fleet depends.
Reus will expand door-to-door collection to 206 more homes
The proposal adapts to Law 7/2022, which obliges municipalities to improve waste prevention, separation, and selective collection. Within this framework, the city council plans to extend the door-to-door service to an additional 206 homes located in an isolated neighborhood.
To do so, the contract will incorporate the purchase of 350 container kits and 50 30-liter bins. It will also include the installation of an emergency contribution island with exclusive access control.
In addition, the city council will maintain commercial collection in the city center and selective collection during festive events, with the acquisition of new bins to support that system.
Smart locks will control the use of containers
Another of the novelties will be the installation of smart locks on the containers. The system will allow controlling the exact use, blocking unauthorized users, and reducing the entry of improper waste.
The measure also leaves the technical basis prepared for future pay-for-generation policies. The change is part of the modernization of the service that the municipal government wants to incorporate into the current contract.
In parallel, the collection of syringes will change from a corrective model to a preventive and continuous control model. The service will add working hours and increase surveillance in parks and gardens.
Daniel Marcos, councilor for Public Works, framed the modification within the update of municipal benefits.
"With this modification, we are strengthening essential services related to cleaning, security, and selective waste collection, adapting them to the current needs of the city" - Daniel Marcos, Councilor for Public Works, Reus City Council
The broken compressor puts more than 95% of the fleet at risk
The contract extension also includes an intervention at the municipal gas station. The city council will replace the current compressor, which is obsolete and broken.
That equipment is key to the ordinary operation of the service because more than 95% of the cleaning vehicle fleet depends on that facility. Its shutdown would compromise the daily operations of the contract.
If the municipal plenary session gives the green light to the modification, the contract extension will come into effect on June 1, 2026.
