The baby was born dead days ago, did not leave home and went to the funeral home: its case awaits the autopsy

The woman arrested in December after going to the funeral home in Tarragona with her dead newborn baby to request its cremation is free. She is obliged to appear before the court whenever required, while the case remains open in the Investigation Section of the Court of First Instance of Tarragona, Plaza nº 6.

The investigation continues in the hands of the Mossos d'Esquadra of the Tarragona police station and remains in the instruction phase. The woman was placed at judicial disposal as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of failure to render aid, although the definitive classification of the facts remains pending the evolution of the procedure.

The arrival at the funeral home and the call to 112

The facts date back to December, when the woman appeared at the Tarragona funeral home around one in the afternoon with the baby between some sheets. There she explained to the workers that the newborn had been born dead a few days earlier and that she had not been able to leave home because she was not feeling well.

Faced with that situation, the facility's employees contacted 112. Shortly after, a Mossos d'Esquadra patrol was dispatched to the scene to take charge of the initial checks.

Transfer to Joan XXIII and detention

The woman was transferred to Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona, where an urgent gynecological examination was performed on her. She was arrested after that medical attention and subsequently brought before the court.

At this moment, the investigation remains open and agents are working to clarify the circumstances of the baby's death. The autopsy result will be key to determine the causes of death and also specify the possible charges that may be attributed to the mother.

A case still under investigation

The judicial procedure is ongoing in Tarragona and is not closed. The autopsy will determine the course of the case, both in relation to the death of the newborn and to the eventual criminal responsibility that may arise from the investigated facts.
