The consortium promoting the Artificial Intelligence gigafactory in Móra la Nova has chosen Francesc Fajula to lead the project, after leaving the general management of Mobile World Capital Barcelona.
The designation is not yet official and will be pending the incorporation of the legal entity that covers the project and approval by a council of ministers. The candidacy has moved from Ribera d'Ebre to an Iberian proposal, with a technical sub-headquarters in San Fernando de Henares and the adhesion of Portugal.
The Iberian bid awaits the European call for June or July
The calendar now depends on the European Commission, which has delayed the formal call for candidacies until June or July of this year.
If the process advances, the evaluation will last two or three months and the results will be published in the last quarter of the year.
Fajula would arrive with an investment of 5 billion planned for 2028
If the candidacy is selected, the Móra la Nova facility would begin operating in early 2028.
The project foresees an estimated investment of 5 billion euros and counts among its promoters Telefónica, ACS, Nvidia, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Spanish State through the State Society of Telecommunications.
Born in Girona in 1971, Fajula is a senior Telecommunications engineer from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and has developed teaching and mentoring experience at Esade, Instituto de Empresa, and INSEAD Business School.
Sergi Novo, manager of the TIC Catalunya Sud Cluster, valued the candidate's profile to fit the project in Southern Catalonia.
"If it is finally confirmed that Francesc Fajula will lead the AI gigafactory in Móra la Nova, we will celebrate it, as he is a person with great experience, territorial sensitivity, and a deep knowledge of the technological potential of Southern Catalonia. However, whoever finally takes on the leadership, they will have our outstretched hand and we are sure that together we will achieve important milestones to position the region at the forefront of the European technological map." - Sergi Novo, manager of the TIC Catalunya Sud Cluster
The proposal, initially announced in June 2025 for Ribera d'Ebre, is now awaiting Brussels to publish the results in the last quarter of the year.
