The State has allocated 12.7 million euros to six projects promoted in the province of Tarragona to foster the circular economy of plastic. This public funding is channeled through the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which maintains a regular line of aid to transform waste into new industrial resources.
Technical capacity for complex waste
The situation demands technical alternatives given a world production of 350 million tons annually where only 9% manages to be reused. Of the total generated, 30 million are recycled and 70 million end up in incineration, while 250 million end up in landfills or the environment and ten million directly pollute the oceans. Faced with this scenario, the new chemical plants will offer capacity to process materials that mechanical recycling cannot absorb. The two highlighted initiatives will be located in the Riu Clar Industrial Estate in Tarragona and in Flix, within the region of Ribera d'Ebre. Both ventures add up to a joint investment of 80 million euros and will generate 100 stable jobs.
"Plastic waste is a big problem with few hopes" - Representatives of the promoting companies, Industrial sector
The regional and local administration continues to monitor the progress of the works to guarantee their integration into the existing productive fabric. Technicians verify that each installation complies with energy efficiency standards before initiating the operational phase. The arrival of these centers will consolidate Catalonia as a European benchmark in the chemical transformation of difficult-to-recycle containers and packaging.
