This Wednesday, the construction of a new section of the Camí de Ronda between the beaches of La Savinosa and La Arrabassada begins in Tarragona, an action called to visually reopen the surroundings of the old preventive center of La Savinosa and to generate a more accessible passage at this point of the coast.
The definitive project foresees a 700-meter route through the interior of the Savinosa estate, a property abandoned for more than half a century. The intervention will be carried out on a surface area ceded by the Diputació de Tarragona of 26,000 square meters, which will be incorporated as public space for citizens.
An interior step with environmental and heritage protection
The performance has been designed with criteria of landscape integration and conservation. The route incorporates the protection of species such as limonium, the preservation of fossilized rocks, and also a small Civil War bunker located in the area.
On the ground, an intervention known as soft work will be carried out, with the objective of respecting the rock and the natural space. This approach also seeks to leave room for a future reconsideration of the management of the area if the intended use or the spatial planning changes over time.
The new section will function as a much more accessible passage than the current itinerary between La Savinosa and La Arrabassada, one of the most frequented points on this Tarragona waterfront.
Six months of works and an investment close to one million euros
The works have an execution period of six months and have an investment of close to 1 million euros. In addition to the new itinerary, the action includes the creation of a permeable enclosure that will allow views towards the old preventive center to be maintained without authorizing public access to the interior of the estate.
The mayor of Tarragona and first vice-president of the Diputació, Rubén Viñuales, has insisted that the intervention will not by itself resolve all the pending elements of the enclave.
"You can't save everything, far from it" - Rubén Viñuales, mayor of Tarragona
Viñuales has shown himself convinced that a space will eventually be created in the old preventorium and has committed to expanding the information on that forecast in not too long.
Institutional collaboration in coastal management
During the presentation, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, defended the scope of the intervention and framed it within the cooperation between administrations to strengthen the response to climate change and improve coastal management.
"Materialize the distance between the value and the price of things" - Hugo Morán, Secretary of State for the Environment
Morán has cited the works on the La Pineda promenade as a reference and has linked both actions to a shared strategy to recover coastal spaces and make them more resilient. In the case of La Savinosa, the start of the works opens a new phase for one of the most recognizable and at the same time most degraded enclaves of the Tarragona coastline, with a view to reconciling public access, environmental preservation, and future use of the old preventive center.
