The publication of the list of applicants for places in schools and institutes of Tarragona confirms the pressure on several centers in the city center and in Llevant for the next academic year. The Institut Antoni de Martí i Franquès has received 154 applications for 108 places, while provisional data indicate that 15 students would be left without a place in the Pons d"Icart and another 15 in the Institut Tarragona.
More demand in the downtown institutes
The situation returns to concentrate in the institutes of the center, where the family associations and different groups had already warned of the lack of places. In these centers, the current ratio moves between 25 and 27 students per class, in function of the area of the city.
Faced with that pressure, practically all of the institutes located outside the center present more supply than demand. The exception is the Pont del Diable of Sant Salvador, where the supply and demand for places coincide.
Imbalance also in several public schools
In the I3 stage, differences also appear between zones and types of centers. The public schools Pràctiques and Miracle have received, respectively, 4 and 7 more applications than the available places. In zone 4 of Llevant, El Miracle adds 7 requests above the offer and l"Arrabassada reaches 10.
The ratio in public schools stands at 17, 18 or 19 students per class, while in subsidized schools it is 20 students per classroom. In the subsidized network, all the centers in the city except Carmelites have more supply than demand in I3. In fact, three of these centers have 16 and 17 places more than enrolled students.
Municipal motion and claims period
The City Council of Tarragona approved a motion on this situation with the favorable votes of PSC, Comuns and ERC, and with the abstention of the rest of the municipal groups.
The process is not yet closed. The deadline to submit claims regarding the places will remain open until the 20th of this month, and the Departament d"Educació has specified that the offer is preliminary and that it can be modified depending on the final demand.
