Tarragona expands its urban art map with the incorporation of four new interactive murals distributed in different neighborhoods of the city. The City Council has promoted this new edition of the project that integrates augmented reality technology in the plastic interventions to encourage citizen participation.
The execution works began this week and have counted on the collaboration of seven local and international artists. The company Suite_of_art has managed the technical and logistical coordination of the paintings that already decorate several municipal facades.
Technology brings heritage closer to retirees
One of the most notable novelties is found in the retirement home in the Bonavista neighborhood. This work pays explicit homage to the memory of the elderly and combines traditional painting with a digital layer accessible through mobile devices.
The augmented reality experience allows direct interaction of visitors with the pictorial elements. Users will be able to scan the mural to discover additional content that complements the visual narrative of the piece.
The rest of the interventions address diverse themes linked to local identity. One of them celebrates the city's Roman heritage, while another recovers the historical figure of the Nina d'Ivori. Sport acts as a central axis in Campclar, where the mural symbolizes neighborhood unity through physical activity.
Seven artists transform public space
The artistic collective responsible for the works is made up of Ceser, Rul, Lalone, Sasa, Eslicer, Dery, and Faker. These creators have applied varied techniques to adapt their styles to the urban supports selected by the council.
Rubén Viñuales, mayor of Tarragona, defended that the initiative positions the city as a hub of cultural innovation. The mayor assured that the combination of creativity and digital tools turns urban furniture into an educational and recreational resource.

The majority of the murals are completely finished and ready to be visited. Only the intervention located in the Francolí area remains to be concluded, although the project managers confirm that its state is very advanced.
Technical services are currently working on the installation of informative signage. These signs will include the necessary codes so that anyone can activate the augmented reality layer from their smartphone without needing to download complex applications.
